Attention has been focused on Tyra Banks after she shocked New York with her dramatic and rapid weight loss.  In photos published in various fashion magazines, she seemed to have dropped at least 4 dress sizes, going from a 14-16 to a size 8.

The star showed off her fast weight loss in a tight body-con dress complete with thigh-high boots and later posed for photographers wearing a pink one-shouldered tunic cinched in tightly at the waist.

In an interview with chat show host Larry King in September, Banks said that her weight loss program had been devised after she made a bet with staff on Next Top Model to see who could stick to a weight loss plan and lose the most pounds.

She said that her weight loss plan wasn’t that complicated – it mainly involved her on her treadmill watching reruns of the TV program Sex and the City. She added that her rapid weight loss had made her feel much healthier, saying, “I feel more comfortable when I’m lighter – I sleep better, I snore less, I have more endurance when I work out.”

The star of America’s Next Top Model and The Tyra Banks Show has struggled with her weight for a few years and there has been a fair amount of controversy about whether she looks better thinner or larger. Photos of her a few years ago in a bikini which revealed some cellulite over her larger-than-model-size thighs caused uproar, as pundits in newspapers argued over whether she was demonstrating a healthy body image or going to seed.

The ex-model has had an uneasy position in the notoriously body-conscious fashion world. While seeking to choose a winner on Next Top Model who will be successful in an industry which at the high-end is very cold towards larger girls, she has also been a champion for better body image and more ‘natural’ beauty.

She recently went on her talk show without her usual hair weaves and clip-ons to promote more authentic beauty and described the experience as ‘liberating’.

He rapid weight loss seems to have been down to healthy eating and exercise rather than the weight loss pills and weight loss tablets popular amongst many Hollywood stars, models and singers. Britney Spears, who was also heavily criticised over her weight gain a few years ago apparently got her six-pack back using Acai Berry weight loss pills, while comedienne Kathy Griffiths said that she was so desperate to be thin that she resorted to weight loss tablets containing the drug speed.

Tyra Banks has now said that she feels proud of her body and best when she doesn’t have any clothes on, commenting, “I’ve made millions of dollars with the body I have, so where’s the pain in that?”
