How To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks On Arms

Stretch marks are caused by rapid weight gain or weight loss. Called ‘striae’ by doctors, the markings are caused when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking down. This is similar to when a piece of elastic loses its elasticity. This causes one’s skin to essentially sag in these areas. Pregnancy is a major cause of striae however adolescent growth spurt, weight lifting, sudden weight gain or weight loss and steroid medications can also cause stretch marks to appear on the arms.

Home remedies, like massaging olive oil into the skin may help to reduce the appearance of minor stretch marks. Another great way to ‘treat’ striae at home is by using self-tanner. Self-tanner or bronzer help disguises the skin flaws, and with reapplication, one can continue to cover up those unsightly marks indefinitely.

Over-the-counter creams or prescriptive cream such as Tretinoin can aid in the reduction of these marks and their appearance but depending on the severity of the scars, it may take a while to get rid of them all together.

Laser treatment such as fractional laser therapy is an alternative to these home remedies. It can be very expensive, running from $400 to $1500 per treatment, and it can take up to six treatments to get rid of stretch marks on arms. Laser treatment is considered to be one of the most effective form of stretch mark removal out there.

These treatments involve a concentrated light that is directed onto the scar marks. It is moved up and down the length of the stretch mark and it removes the top layers of the skin, including the scar tissue. After the old skin is removed, new skin tissue is formed, and the appearance of striae is gradually reduced. Again, this depends upon the severity of the condition. For people with deeper marks, multiple laser treatments will be required to completely get rid of the striae scars.

For prevention, experts recommend that the skin be moisturize with creams or lotions that contain antioxidants, Shea Butter and vitamins, like vitamin E. These make the skin supple, firm and elastic so when the skin is stretched, no scar tissue is created.
