The Atkins diet is one of the most world renowned and popular diets that many people have successfully lost weight from participating in. Dr. Atkins created a diet that produced rapid weight loss results with little or no effort by cutting out essential food groups and replacing them with other non-essential ones. This could very possibly be why physicians and other medical professionals do not recommend this diet no matter how effective it is.

Essentially the Atkins diet causes rapid weight loss and fat loss because it removes the most essential part of a person’s diet, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential because they provide 60 percent of the calories needed to promote healthy body functions. Without carbohydrates our body has no fuel to generate and maintain its processes from.

This leaves many feeling lethargic and tired while also lowering ones immune response to infection and illness. Because carbohydrates make up most of the bodies calories, rapid weight loss results from removing this whole food group. This also removes fruit because many fruits naturally are high in carbohydrates, but also have essential vitamins and minerals that we must get from consuming. Although this causes rapid weight loss, it may also cause rapid deterioration of overall health.

The Atkins diet promotes the substitution of protein instead of carbohydrates. Protein is an essential part of an everyday diet however; it should only consist of 20 to 30 percent of a normal diet. The Atkins diet states that the overall most important category of a person’s diet is protein. The Atkins diet is also commonly known as the meat eater’s diet because it states that carbohydrates such as whole grains and fruits are bad but a pound of bacon is good.

This logically makes no sense and may explain why Dr. Atkins is now dead. Consuming large quantities of meat is unhealthy and ironically dangerous because many meats promote cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis. These diseases can be detrimental to ones health which is why the Atkins diet is unhealthy.

Any diet that deprives a person’s diet of essential elements such as whole grains and fruits is absurd and dangerous. This may promote rapid weight loss, but will essentially kill you in the long run. This is why before starting any specific diet, you should consult your physician first to ensure that you lose weight in a healthy fashion.
